Receive and inspect
Counted, checked for damage and matched to your ASN.

Every size and color labeled right, bagged right and sent to Amazon on time, from the same inventory as your DTC orders.
An apparel listing on Amazon is a family of size and color variations, each with its own FNSKU. Put the wrong label on a medium, skip a suffocation warning on a poly bag, or overpack a carton, and inventory can be delayed or rejected at Amazon. OC3PL prepares apparel for FBA with standardized workflows and barcode checks before anything leaves the building.
The day-to-day work that keeps apparel moving into Amazon.
FBA prep is everything that happens between your factory carton and Amazon’s receiving dock. For apparel, it is mostly about labels, bags and cartons, done the same way every time.
| Prep step | What it means for apparel | What goes wrong without it |
|---|---|---|
| FNSKU labeling | A label for each size and color variation | Units received under the wrong variation |
| Poly bagging | Each unit bagged, with suffocation warnings where required | Inventory flagged at receiving |
| Bundling | Multi-packs bagged or banded and labeled as one unit | Bundles split and sold as singles |
| Carton prep | Cartons packed and labeled to Amazon’s requirements | Overweight boxes and carton label errors |
| Pallet prep | Pallets built and labeled for LTL shipments | Pallet configuration problems at the dock |
| Barcode verification | Labels scanned and checked before shipping | Mislabeled units discovered at Amazon |
Amazon’s prep requirements change. Check the current rules for your category in Seller Central, and tell us about any change that affects your ASINs. Our standing workflows are updated as Amazon updates its requirements.
Twenty variations of one style, each with its own label.
Apparel is where FBA labeling goes wrong most often, because the units look nearly identical. A medium and a large in the same color are the same shape in the same bag. The only thing that tells them apart is the label.
OC3PL stores apparel by size and color in separate locations. When we prep for Amazon, each variation is pulled from its own location, labeled with its own FNSKU and verified by scan before it goes into a carton. If your factory bags and labels units at production, send the barcode list with your advance shipping notice so we can check every inbound unit against it.
Clean data helps. Make sure each variation in Seller Central has a unique FNSKU, and that it matches the SKU and barcode your other channels use for the same item. See size and color variants explained and apparel barcodes.
Many apparel brands sell on their own store and on Amazon. OC3PL supports both approaches at once. With FBA, we act as the prep center that receives, inspects, labels and forwards inventory into Amazon’s network. With Fulfillment by Merchant, orders placed on Amazon route from Seller Central into our warehouse system for immediate fulfillment.
Running both from one inventory pool lets you keep a buffer in Anaheim and send Amazon replenishment in measured shipments. When Amazon stock runs low, the next shipment is prepped from units already on our shelves rather than waiting for a new factory order.
The warehouse sits near Amazon receiving centers in Southern California. Prepped inventory often reaches Amazon the same day or the next morning after it leaves our dock.
Inbound is quick as well. We are twenty-five miles from the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, where much imported apparel arrives. Labeled, scheduled inbound is received within one business day. Volume and location in a major logistics hub bring discounted small parcel and freight rates and flexible pickup scheduling. See apparel imports through LA and Long Beach.
Most problems are small and avoidable.
Common causes of FBA problems are missing FNSKU labels, incorrect carton labeling, overweight boxes, missing suffocation warnings, mixed inventory errors and pallet configuration problems. Even small mistakes can trigger inbound delays, chargebacks, rejected shipments or receiving problems inside Amazon fulfillment centers.
Standard workflows and quality checks before inventory leaves the warehouse are what reduce that risk as SKU counts and shipment volume grow. For apparel, the most important single check is the label scan, because so many units look alike.
If you already have problems at Amazon, send us the receiving discrepancies or notices you have had. Your account manager can review them during onboarding and set up the prep workflow to address them.
Confirm your routing preference before the shipment plan is created, so the carton plan is right. Tell your rep which ASINs travel together. Most shipments are prepped and forwarded within 24 to 48 hours after inbound receiving, depending on size, prep complexity and inbound volume.
Not every size belongs in Amazon’s network.
Amazon storage costs rise with slow inventory, and apparel has a lot of slow sizes. A practical split for many apparel brands:
| Inventory | Where it usually lives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Core sizes of best sellers | FBA, replenished regularly | Steady sales justify Amazon storage |
| Edge sizes and slow colors | Anaheim, shipped FBM or sent in small batches | Avoids long-term storage at Amazon |
| New styles | Anaheim first, then FBA once demand is known | Lets you test before committing stock |
| DTC-only styles and bundles | Anaheim | Serve your own store and wholesale |
Because both pools sit in one place before they split, you can rebalance as you learn. Weekly reporting shows inventory status by SKU. Check Amazon’s current storage and inventory rules when you plan, because they change.
Amazon handles returns for FBA orders inside its own network. When you pull inventory back from Amazon with a removal order, ask us before it ships: how removal orders are received, inspected and restocked is agreed with your account manager during onboarding.
Returns are processed and logged within 48 hours of receipt, and many are handled the same day. Each item is inspected and restocked, discarded or donated by the rules you set.
Inspected stock that is sellable can go back into your DTC inventory or be prepped again for FBA. Monthly reports show return reasons by SKU across the returns we handle. See apparel returns and exchanges.
Multi-packs of basics, like socks, tees and underwear, are common on Amazon. Each bundle must be packed and labeled so it is received and sold as one unit, not split into singles.
OC3PL handles kitting and bundling as part of FBA prep, with barcode verification and quality checks before anything ships. Tell us how each bundle should be packed and labeled, and whether the individual unit barcodes need to be covered. Check Amazon’s current bundle requirements for your category before you set up a new multi-pack.
Bundles can be built ahead of a shipment or as part of the prep run. See apparel kitting.
Brands that prep in-house usually stop for the same reasons: the work takes over the team as SKU counts grow, small labeling mistakes lead to delays at Amazon, and nobody has time to keep up with rule changes.
A prep partner with standard workflows and barcode checks takes that off your team. Doing it in the same building as your DTC fulfillment means one inventory, one set of counts and one account manager who sees both.
OC3PL supports private label brands, wholesale sellers, multi-channel businesses using Amazon for reach and brands launching on Amazon for the first time. Workflows scale from simple FNSKU labeling to bundled shipments and palletized freight.
Most clients go live within five to ten business days, depending on complexity. See apparel 3PL onboarding for what the first days look like.
Amazon changes its requirements, and the change rarely arrives at a convenient time. You need someone who can look at the shipment on the floor and adjust.
Your account manager works on site at our Anaheim fulfillment center, in the same building as your inventory. When something is urgent you call and talk to a person who can walk to the shelf and fix it. Call anytime. We are here. We got you. All client requests are acknowledged within two hours, and support is never outsourced.
