The Apparel Ecommerce Tech Stack

Store, returns, reviews, email and the warehouse. What each tool does, and how orders move between them.

Five Jobs, Not Fifty Apps

An apparel brand’s tech stack can look like a wall of logos. Underneath, it does five jobs: take the order, ship the order, handle what comes back, talk to the customer, and keep the numbers straight. Pick one tool per job and make sure they talk to each other.

    The five jobs:

  • Selling

The store platform holds products, variants, prices and the checkout. Everything else connects to it.
  • Fulfilling

The 3PL’s warehouse management system receives orders, directs picking and sends tracking back.
  • Returns

A returns app or portal lets customers start a return or exchange without emailing you.
  • Talking to customers

Email, text and help desk tools send order updates and answer questions.
  • Knowing your numbers

Analytics and accounting tools show what sold, what came back and what it cost.

The Store Platform Is the Center

Every other tool reads from it or writes back to it.

Your store platform, such as Shopify, WooCommerce or BigCommerce, is where products live. For apparel that means every style, every size and every color, each with its own SKU and barcode. If the catalog is messy here, it is messy everywhere downstream.

Most apparel brands also sell somewhere else: Amazon, TikTok Shop, wholesale accounts. Each channel either connects to the store platform or connects directly to the warehouse. Either way, the goal is one inventory number per SKU that every channel can see.

What to get right first

  • One SKU per size and color, with a consistent naming pattern. See size and color variants explained.
  • A barcode on every variant, so the warehouse can scan it. See apparel barcodes.
  • Weights on every product, so shipping rates are right at checkout.
  • Retired variants actually archived, not just hidden, so they stop syncing.

How an Order Moves Through the Stack

From the customer clicking buy to the tracking email.

  1. The customer checks out on your store. The platform records the order and the size and color ordered.
  2. The integration sends the order to the 3PL’s warehouse management system automatically. Nobody exports a spreadsheet.
  3. The warehouse picks, scans, packs and labels the order. The carrier and service are chosen for that package.
  4. The tracking number flows back to the store, which emails or texts the customer.
  5. The shipped units are deducted, and the new inventory level syncs back to every channel so nobody oversells.

Each arrow in that chain is a connection that can break. When a brand says "orders are stuck" or "we oversold mediums again", the cause is usually one of these hand-offs. A good 3PL tells you exactly what syncs and how often before you rely on it.

Read more about the hand-offs in how inventory syncing works and breaks and how to integrate Shopify with a 3PL.

Returns, Reviews and Messages

The tools customers touch after the order.

Apparel brands handle more returns and exchanges than most product categories, because fit is personal. A returns app gives customers a self-service portal, creates the return label and tells the warehouse what is coming back. When the item arrives, the warehouse inspects it and restocks it or sets it aside under your rules.

Returns tools that OC3PL’s integrations directory names include Loop, Happy Returns, AfterShip Returns, Narvar and ReturnGo. If you already use one of them, the experience your customer sees can stay the same while the warehouse handles inspection and restocking. More in how returns portals work.

Email and text tools send the shipping confirmation, the delivery notice and the "how did it fit" follow-up. Reviews tools ask for feedback after delivery. Both depend on accurate tracking data coming back from the warehouse.

A Simple Stack Map

MessagingEmail, text, help deskStore, tracking data"Where is my order?" tickets pile up

When you add a tool, ask two questions: what does it read, and what does it write back? If nobody can answer, it will cause a problem during your next drop.

Where OC3PL Fits

OC3PL connects to the platforms most apparel brands already use, including Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Amazon. If a connection does not exist, the in-house team builds it. You get a client portal with inventory counts by SKU, inbound status and order tracking, and alerts for low stock or shipping exceptions.

Your account manager works on site at our Anaheim fulfillment center, in the same building as your inventory. When something is urgent you call and talk to a person who can walk to the shelf and fix it. Call anytime. We are here. We got you.

If you are choosing a warehouse now, start with high-volume apparel fulfillment or the apparel 3PL checklist.

Common Questions

One tool for each job: a store platform, a fulfillment connection to your warehouse, a returns app or portal, email and text messaging, and analytics. Fewer tools that connect well beat many tools that do not.

Through an integration. Orders flow from the store to the warehouse management system automatically, and tracking and inventory levels flow back. You install an app or provide an API key, and the 3PL maps your SKUs and runs test orders.

Not always, but most apparel brands benefit from one because returns and exchanges are frequent. A returns portal lets customers start a return without emailing you and tells the warehouse what is coming back.

Usually because inventory is not syncing between the warehouse and every sales channel, or because counts at the warehouse are wrong. A scan at every pick and a live inventory sync fix most of it.

With OC3PL, yes. The client portal shows inventory counts at the SKU level, inbound shipment status and order tracking.

Ask the 3PL whether a connector exists or whether it would be built through the API. OC3PL’s in-house team builds connections when one does not exist.
