Launching Your First Apparel Collection

Everything to line up before your first collection goes live, so launch day is about selling, not scrambling.

Why a Checklist

A first launch has many small parts, and most of them only become obvious when they go wrong. A checklist moves the surprises to before the launch, when they are cheap to fix.

    The areas to cover:

  • Product

Final samples, fit, size chart and photos.
  • Catalog

    SKUs, barcodes and variant setup.
  • Packaging

Mailers, inserts and how items are folded.
  • Store

Product pages, shipping rates and policies.
  • Fulfillment and returns

Who packs, who ships, and how returns come back.

Before Production Finishes

  • Approve final samples for fit in every size, not just one.
  • Write a size chart from measurements of the actual product. See how to write a size chart.
  • Shoot photos that show true color, fabric and fit.
  • Decide quantities and size mix. See how much to order for a first run.
  • Set a SKU pattern, such as style, color, size, and stick to it.
  • Get a barcode for every size and color. See apparel barcodes.
  • Ask the factory to bag each item and label the bag with SKU, size and color.

Before Inventory Arrives at the Warehouse

  • Choose your fulfillment: packing yourself or a 3PL. See what an apparel 3PL is.
  • Connect your store to the warehouse and run test orders.
  • Write packing instructions with photos: folding, bagging, inserts, mailer.
  • Send packaging and inserts so they arrive with or before the stock.
  • Send an advance shipping notice listing every SKU and quantity.
  • Label every carton with its contents.

Inventory that arrives labeled and announced is sellable quickly. At OC3PL, labeled inbound is received and slotted within one business day, with every size and color in its own location.

Tell your warehouse the launch date and how many orders you expect, even if it is a guess. If you plan bundles or a gift with purchase, say so ahead of time so they can be built in advance.

Launch Day and the Week After

  1. Watch inventory as orders come in and mark sold-out sizes.
  2. Stay in touch with your warehouse contact.
  3. Answer customer questions quickly, especially about shipping times.
  4. Track which sizes and colors sell out first.
  5. Watch the first exchanges and returns and read the reasons.
  6. Write down what to change for the next drop.

Orders imported by 12 PM PST ship the same day. Your account manager works on site at our Anaheim fulfillment center, in the same building as your inventory. When something is urgent you call and talk to a person who can walk to the shelf and fix it. Call anytime. We are here. We got you.

When you are ready for a bigger release, read planning a streetwear drop.

The Mistakes That Show Up on Launch Day

Most launch-day problems trace back to something small that was skipped earlier. These are the ones that come up most often for a first collection:

Problem on launch dayWhat was skipped
Wrong sizes in the storeVariants set up in the store did not match the barcodes on the product
Orders for items not yet receivedStore showed stock before the warehouse had counted it
Packages without insertsInserts arrived after the inventory, or were not in the instructions
Customers asking where their order isShipping times and tracking emails were not set up
Returns going to your home addressThe return address was never updated

Run one full test order before launch: buy an item from your own store, watch it reach the warehouse, ship, and arrive. Then start a return on it. If every step works, launch day is just about selling.

Common Questions

Final products with a tested size chart and good photos, a SKU and barcode for every variant, packaging, a store with shipping and return policies, and a plan for packing and shipping orders.

It depends on your volume and time. Many brands pack the first orders themselves and move to a 3PL as orders grow. OC3PL has no order minimums, so a first collection is welcome.

At least a week before launch, so it can be received, counted and slotted. OC3PL receives and slots labeled inbound within one business day.

Yes. Each size and color should have its own barcode so it can be scanned at receiving and at the pick.

How to fold each item, what bag and mailer to use, which inserts go in, and photos of a correctly packed order.

Which sizes and colors sell out first, what is left, and why customers return items. That data shapes your next order.

Place a real order on your own store, follow it to the warehouse and to your door, then start a return on it. Fix anything that breaks.
